What We Do

Ultrasound

What it is:

Otherwise known as diagnostic medical sonography (ultrasonography), ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging technique that uses sound waves to produce images of different tissues in the body. Ultrasound is familiar to many of us for its use in obstetrics to scan the fetus and pregnant uterus. The liver, spleen, gallbladder and kidneys are also frequently evaluated. Ultrasound, along with a technique to detect moving blood flow (Doppler), is often used to examine the arteries and veins in the neck, arms and legs.

What you need to know:

An ultrasound is generally considered to be a safe diagnostic tool in terms of bioeffects when performed by a licensed operator with technique conforming to national standards.

How to prepare:

Some food and liquid restrictions and preparations may be required to produce an ultrasound exam. Your provider will advise of any special instructions regarding your medications and other preparations.
